On June 28, 1969 in New York City, police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay club in Greenwich Village, which resulted in bar patrons, staff, and neighborhood residents rioting onto Christopher Street outside. The message was clear: protestors wanted places where LGBT+ people could be open about their sexual orientation without fear of arrest. This morphed into a Gay Pride Week march a year later, and was the catalyst for the formation of similar parades and marches and the LGBTQ movement across the world. Pride Month was officially recognized in the U.S. in 1999.
